How cool is your school?
Save the environment at the same time as getting students outside and curious!
What student doesn’t want to be cool? What school doesn’t want to be cool? Everybody wants to be cool right? Well, they can be. At least as a climate perspective is concerned!
At Wild Incursions, we have created a fun and rewarding activity where your students walk around in small interactive groups, analysing and assessing the school’s performance and efficiency on:
-
Electricity usage
-
Computer and photocopiers
-
Heating and Cooling systems
-
Insulation
-
Lighting
-
Water use
-
Tree planting
-
Renewable energy
-
Recycling and rubbish
-
Food wastage
-
Climate education
Empowering students to assess their schools ecological footprint gives them a concrete understanding of how larger communities can impact on the Earth’s systems and how they, as students, can make a difference. More than that, engaging students in an ecological footprint exercise elicits curiosity, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in taking action to reduce the demand they place on nature. It helps to further foster a connection to nature as well as take an active roll in the future of the world they live in for many years to come.
So, not only will the school be ‘cooler’ from an ecological impact perspective, but the students will think they are pretty cool as well – being given the power to take part in their own schools sustainable footprint! They even get a badge to proudly wear to show of their ‘Cool Climate Champ’ status!
